Lightweight robots in combination with electric wheelchairs can help to restore the mobility of people with disabilities. These systems make it possible to reach distant objects and perform complex tasks. One example is the assistive robot system EDAN, which consists of a wheelchair with a lightweight robotic arm and a hand. EDAN can be controlled via a joystick or even via muscle signals that are measured directly on the surface of the person's skin. Relatives can also control EDAN and the robotic arm remotely via smartphones or tablets. The lightweight robots are particularly light and flexible, which facilitates transportation between workstations.
